What does vigilant mean? A google search definition says...
keeping careful watch for possible danger or difficulties.
Ie; "the burglar was spotted by vigilant neighbours"
Other words it uses to describe it are:
watchful, on the lookout, observant, sharp-eyed, keen-eyed, gimlet-eyed, eagle-eyed, hawk-eyed, with eyes like a hawk, with one's eyes open, keeping one's eyes peeled/skinned, attentive, paying attention, alert, on the alert, on one's toes, on the qui vive.
This morning - today- I got a new and a real sense that we as Christians need to be much more vigilant. I was aware more clearly how careful we need to be.
The enemy (Satan) is just that, an enemy. Not a bad guy. THE BAD GUY! He is against us because we are with God. He despises us. He not only wants us to trip up; he uses a cunningness and deception to trip us up!
In John 8:44 Jesus himself says this of the devil...
"He was a murderer from the beginning. He has always hated the truth, because there is no truth in him. When he lies, it is consistent with his character; for he is a liar and the father of lies."
This scripture came to mind...
Ephesians 6:12 For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places.
2 Thessalonians 2:7 For this lawlessness is already at work secretly, and it will remain secret until the one who is holding it back steps out of the way.
How can we be more vigilant?
Read this passage of scripture first...
2 John 1:5-9 I am writing to remind you, dear friends, that we should love one another. This is not a new commandment, but one we have had from the beginning. Love means doing what God has commanded us, and he has commanded us to love one another, just as you heard from the beginning. I say this because many deceivers have gone out into the world. They deny that Jesus Christ came in a real body. Such a person is a deceiver and an antichrist. Watch out that you do not lose what we have worked so hard to achieve. Be diligent so that you receive your full reward. Anyone who wanders away from this teaching has no relationship with God. But anyone who remains in the teaching of Christ has a relationship with both the Father and the Son.
We can be vigilant by:
1. Loving one another as Christ commanded us.
John 13:35 Your love for one another will prove to the world that you are my disciples.”
2. Stay in the Word. In Christ's teaching. It is truth. Do not wander from it.
3. Prepare for battle. Put on all your armour.
Ephesians 6:13 Therefore, put on every piece of God’s armor so you will be able to resist the enemy in the time of evil. Then after the battle you will still be standing firm.
So I'm sharing this reminder today with you. Do not fall asleep. Do not grow tired of doing good. Love one another. Remain in Christ. Put on all your armour. Be ready for battle. Be in the look out. Because the master of lies and the evil powers in the heavenly realms are against you!
But be encouraged!
Romans 8:31b-37 If God is for us, who can ever be against us? Since he did not spare even his own Son but gave him up for us all, won’t he also give us everything else? Who dares accuse us whom God has chosen for his own? No one—for God himself has given us right standing with himself. Who then will condemn us? No one—for Christ Jesus died for us and was raised to life for us, and he is sitting in the place of honor at God’s right hand, pleading for us. Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? As the Scriptures say, “For your sake we are killed every day; we are being slaughtered like sheep.” No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us.
