Straight to the point...
It is very sad and extremely disappointing to see the word of God not followed, taken out of context and disrespected.
These are just some of the arguments that are used to substantiate a view that Gods word is not important:
1. I don't understand everything it says
2. Science is more substantial
3. There is strange stuff in it
4. It's old
5. It is just stories
6. It's not relevant
7. We have the Holy Spirit now so it's not as important.
8. I don't like what it says
WRONG! WRONG!! WRONG!!! Be careful brothers and sisters not to be led astray.
Gods word is very clear...
John 1:1 In the beginning the Word already existed. The Word was with God, and the Word was God.
Romans 16:17-18 And now I make one more appeal, my dear brothers and sisters. Watch out for people who cause divisions and upset people’s faith by teaching things contrary to what you have been taught. Stay away from them. Such people are not serving Christ our Lord; they are serving their own personal interests. By smooth talk and glowing words they deceive innocent people.
Joshua 1:7-8 Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the instructions Moses gave you. Do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left. Then you will be successful in everything you do. Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.
Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp to guide my feet and a light for my path.
Jeremiah 16:11-12 “Then you will give them the Lord’s reply: ‘It is because your ancestors were unfaithful to me. They worshiped other gods and served them. They abandoned me and did not obey my word. And you are even worse than your ancestors! You stubbornly follow your own evil desires and refuse to listen to me.
2 Timothy 3:16-17 All Scripture is inspired by God and is useful to teach us what is true and to make us realize what is wrong in our lives. It corrects us when we are wrong and teaches us to do what is right. God uses it to prepare and equip his people to do every good work.
There are so many scriptures which tell us to be careful, that remind us of the danger of straying from the Word of God. It encourages us to read and follow the Word. These ones above are just the first which came to my mind.
And specifically about number 7. We have the Holy Spirit now so it's not as important. -- God gave us Jesus Christ (the Word) and then sent His Holy Spirt. God is a trinity. They are meant to and do work together! They are not separate.
Yes we have the Holy Spirit and we are living free from the old covenant the law. But everything we feel, hear or think we hear from the Holy Spirt must, absolutely must line up with Gods Word. You cannot have one without the other.
The problem is so many people twist scripture ever so slightly... just like satan did in the garden.
If you are meant to be headed due north and when walking stray ever so slightly, even if by mistake, you end up at a different location. You will actually be headed instead to north west.
That's why Gods word warns us "do not deviate from them, turning either to the right or to the left".
Satan and his evil ones know the word of God also. Satan used the word of God (out of context) when tempting Jesus in the desert. We must be careful.
If you are unsure what is being taught get your bible out and check. Don't listen to everything you hear and simply accept it. Measure it against the Word of God. If it doesn't line up toss it away.
In times such as these: the end times; we need to be extra careful. Many more false teachers and prophets will arise.
Stick to the truth no matter what! If you stray (I know we all make mistakes), ask God for forgiveness and ask Him to lead you back to what is completely His truth.
